How much should we be consciously controlling our voice?

Singers often come to me for help to get more ‘control’ over their voice.  But is control really a good thing?

Singing requires the movement and coordination of about 100 muscles. The problem is that we actually don’t have conscious control over most of these muscles.

So, when we try to control all of these muscles consciously, we are doomed to fail!

That’s why I work with singers to develop body awareness through movement. Rather than a singer being told to do (or not do) a specific thing, the singer develops body awareness through particular movements. These can involve arms, legs, head, neck, tongue and others. Some movements make singing easier, some make it harder. Either way, they are helping the singer experience different possibilities and sensations.

Once the brain has developed this new awareness it can find new pathways to solve problems. Limitations can sometimes just literally disappear, as if by magic :).

What’s more is we don’t need to control this new pathway consciously. We then get the bandwidth to focus on telling a story and connecting with our audience, which is  a lot more fun than wondering if our throat is open enough or if we are breathing correctly!

If you want to find out more about this way of working, don’t hesitate to get in touch.

  • Why do I sound worse when I sing somewhere else?

When I went to uni, I remember hating singing in the Queensland Conservatorium Theatre. I was told by several people that it had ‘some of the best acoustics of any venue in Australia’, but that didn’t change my mind. I performed multiple operas, recitals and auditions there and I always felt that I’d sung less…

  • Why Singers are like Athletes

What would you need to do to become an elite athlete? If you asked someone this question, you’d probably get responses like: But if you swap the word athlete for singer, would you get the same responses?  Or would it be more like ‘it’s all about luck’ and ‘it’s a talent you’re born with’?  Dr…
